Step 1: Data Collection and Understanding

Whenever we want to learn about something through data collection, it's very important to understand what instruments we will use to actually collect our data. In the case of our rocket, we used the Science Journal app to measure how long our rocket was in the air and how much the scape to the water due to the air pressure accelerated it. To understand how Science Journal is helping us to measure time, we did some exercises moving the cellphones one coordinate at the time and seeing how the accelerometer of each coordinate (X, Y and Z) sensor changed. We paid attention to when the graph was changing and how it was changing. We realized that if we record the data, we can replay it and take notes. We can then identify the initial time that the graph displayed big changes and the final time that we did not see big changes in the graph. Collecting the initial time and final time helped us to calculate the overall time of the cellphone moving. We also explored the concept of acceleration, and learned that knowing the acceleration give us also information about the velocity of the rocket. When the acceleration is positive, the rocket is going up. When the acceleration is negative, the rocket is going down. When the acceleration was zero, it had reached its highest point. This information helped us determine what time the rocket reached its highest point and how much time it took to go down.

Step 2: Data Interpretation

After collecting our data with Science Journal app, we shared our graphs with the rest the our community. We all calculated the time our rocket was in the air, how long it took to reach the highest point, and how long it took to go down. We discussed how the graphs were different between rockets. We theorized why some rockets flew for a longer time and why, in some cases, it was slower for the rocket to go down than to go up (especially if the parachute was working!) Some of our older children exported the data to their google drive and began trying to interpret it. We learned about relative time, time stamps, and basic use of spreadsheets.
